World Vegetarian Day was first started in England in 1994. Social worker Louise Wallis founded the Vegan Society in the UK and became its president. Some studies suggest that vegetarianism reduces the risk of heart disease and premature death. It also helps to manage type 2 diabetes. It even reduces the risk of cancer.

On World Vegetarianism Day, Sanjay Sethi, Executive Director, Plant Based Foods Industry Association (PBFIA) in India, hopes that the awareness of plant based foods will spread more rapidly in India, as these foods are disease free. They are also capable of protecting against many diseases.

It will be more eco-friendly and its consumption will also improve the food ecosystem. Sanjay Sethi says, “It is high time for the society to become aware of the importance of plant based food. With rising temperatures, increasing zoonotic diseases, the threat of soil erosion, desertification and increasing population, there is no better alternative than plant-based food for good health. ,
